I am guessing my relationship with the app will continue to be a love-hate one, but I am excited to see how I feel about Tik Tok next week. While I think the app has plenty of potential to be the new vine, because there is a lot of content on the app that makes me laugh out loud even while sitting alone in bed, there are also so much content that questions how people are allowed to have access to the internet. Over the semester, I am going to continue my research into Tik Tok. In addition to all this, these videos do not depict the traumatic events with a powerful message, yet almost normalize the events. There are POV videos in which it depicts people falling in love with their kidnapper, people being raped, and girls pretending to bully other girls. While most of these videos are harmless, there are many that consist of traumatizing events being romanticized, bullying being encouraged, and more.

The “point-of-view” posts are a popular thread in which people act infront of the camera, typically labeling the video explaining their acting. One of the largest issues I have seen on Tik Tok so far is the POV posts. There also seems to be a repulsive subgenre of Tik Tok making fun of the Holocaust, which I will never understand. People post videos making fun of other races, labeling it as a “harmless joke”. Most other social media accounts would shut this down immediately with hate comments and reports, however all the comments I saw were words of encouragement. Here are some more examples of Tik Tok toxicity. Some of the comments included, “Stop trying to hide your double chin”, “Why do your teeth look like that get braces”, and “You’re fat”. The caption of all these videos were “Bring back bullying 2020 chain”, followed by a text making fun of physical characteristics of the person in the video before. Today, I came across a chain video, in which people duet other people’s videos in a chain. Popular creators are not afraid to call out other creators on any bullshit. People consistently comment rude things on others accounts, ruthlessly hiding behind a phone screen. After spending hours in my bed looking into the drama, I came to a realization of one simple fact: there is no app more toxic than Tik Tok. As I started following more “Tik Tok Tea” accounts, reading more comments on popular creator accounts, and reading articles and videos on the drama. Then, before I knew it, I found myself fully invested in the lives of the “popular creators”, specifically the drama. I admitted that I started to enjoy the content, and it gradually become more of a go-to app on my phone. One day, I got annoyed of my friends sending me Tik Toks and me having to go through Safari to watch them, so I downloaded the app.
